Dye Testing a Crack for Leaks
I was ask by the pool builder to dye test and repair this cracked pool. This pool had two structural crack that were leaking and two others that weren’t. Cracks in swimming pool aren’t particularly uncommon here in the Phoenix area, I have repaired hundreds if not a thousand. Most of the cracks I see and repair are less that a dime’s width and under 10 feet in length. I get calls all the time reporting water loss in pools from homeowner, when I ask them if they see any visible cracks in the pool’s finish material I often hear “only a hairline crack or two”. Now, not all cracks leak and not all leaking pools leak from cracks, but its the best place to start looking. I recommend a dye test when I hear back from homeowners that they see cracks, but there are other places that a pool can leak from, plumbing, light niche and finish material voids around penetrations are three common sources of leaks.
I charge less for a dye test (watch video and pay attention to the red dye being pushed out of the pool by the water pressure) than the plumbing pressure testing companies charge for a pressure test of the plumbing system, a lot of them do dye testing as well, but they still charge full price and I’m guessing if they see a crack it’s the first place they check, thank you ma’am, that will be full price please! Now call Underwater Operations to have it repaired. It’s the story I hear all the time from homeowners.
